May 10, 2008Building ExcessesCheck out this page on Dubai’s architecture. Very impressive. Even more impressive is the fact that it’s been paid for by us, the oil consumers, designed by North American and European firms, and built through the sweat and labor of tens of thousands of African and Asian workers. Make of that what you will. Posted by vman at May 10, 2008 08:31 PMComments
While impressive, it still doesn’t seem like more than Las Vegas on steroids with an IV of amphetamines. If you look at the photos and renderings, remove all the little sparkly effects, it still looks a lot like the 1960’s Dubai, with some slender buildings. My friends working on some of these projects report low-rise sprawl surrounding the core that makes the mediocrity of most canadian suburban office parks seem desirable. (still laughing) Posted by: Phil at May 12, 2008 02:50 AMThere is no limit to achievement with oil and unlimited access to cheap labor. Posted by: Memphis at May 14, 2008 05:50 PMPost a comment
